Character's Full Name: Grace Abigail "Abbie" Mills
Canon: Sleepy Hollow
PB/Actor: Nicole Beharie
Character's Starting Level: Currently undecided.
Character Age: 28
Physical Description:
Abbie is on the small side, standing at 5'1" with a petite build. She has dark brown hair and brown eyes, and while her stature might occasionally lead people to underestimate her, she still manages to have a great deal of presence despite her size, largely thanks to the way she carries herself and her professional mannerisms. She dresses simply and practically when not in uniform, and has no distinguishing marks or tattoos (that we know of).
Character's Species/Race: Human

Character History (Pre-Veil): Abbie @ the Sleepy Hollow Wiki
Post-Veil History:
Abbie had expected the reversal of the Traveler Spell to take her back to present-day Sleepy Hollow, exactly where she’d been when the spell had initially been cast. Instead, she found herself propelled from the Revolutionary-era Hudson Valley to Oxford, England, though the reason why eluded her for her first few days through the Veil. She was quick to regain her bearings and establish where and when she was, though anything beyond that remained a mystery. She began following up on rumors of anything that seemed even remotely mystical or potentially magical, which was what lead to her meeting Kate Beckett shortly after her arrival in January.

It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time-- or the wrong place, depending on who you asked. While Abbie hadn’t known exactly what she was walking into when she’d decided to chase down this particular rumor, she and Kate both found themselves faced with a nest full of ghouls. In an arguably unfair twist of fate, both women were arrested when discovered at the scene, despite having handled themselves well and fired more than their fair share of bullets to try and keep the ghouls contained. It was then that they had time to talk, and Kate admitted to being impressed with how Abbie had handled herself, commenting that it took a lot for a person to see what they’d seen and not run the other way. Abbie talked openly about her own experiences with the Supernatural for the first time since coming through the Veil, while Kate explained the concept of the Veil itself and what it meant to be Shadowkind.

Eventually, they were both set free, but not before Kate offered Abbie a card for the Karthur Institute, along with her cell phone number, asking her to get in touch if she found herself in London. With no other leads and no one else to turn to, two days later she put herself on a train and decided to take Kate up on her offer, leading her to the Knights.

Chosen Canon Point: 2x18, "Tempus Fugit," upon being thrust back to the present.

Personality and Psychology:
Abbie is often seen to be the quintessential Good Cop, which is a sharp contrast to how she’d spent her teen years, getting into every kind of trouble imaginable as she bounced between foster homes along with her sister, Jenny, both earning themselves a reputation for shoplifting and a number of other things, including breaking and entering. It was Sheriff August Corbin who helped steer her towards law enforcement, arresting her during an attempted break-in and opting to take her to the local diner instead of the sheriff’s station. What he offered her was an opportunity to turn her life around, to get back on the right path before it was too late. She took it, becoming his protege and starting work with the sheriff’s department immediately upon graduating high school, forgetting her taste for criminal activity while her sister stubbornly held onto her own. She became star of the department early on, going on to work alongside Sheriff Corbin as his partner for a number of years before being offered the chance to go to Quantico, proof of just how far she’d come since her troubled teen years.

Abbie is fair-minded and in possession of a strong sense of justice, passionate about her work and very invested in the actual mission part of it -- she places a great deal of importance on what it means to be a police officer and the responsibilities that come along with it, and her job is far more than just a paycheck to her. Even after her eyes are fully opened to the world of the supernatural and the impending End of Days, she takes pride in being good at her job, takes her work seriously and makes every effort to operate within the confines of the law whenever possible. She shows reluctance about bending rules and regulations early on, although she’s quick to make executive decisions about doing so as she becomes more confident concerning her mission as a Witness in addition to what she already holds herself accountable for as lieutenant.

Her sense of duty is just as strong; she’s quick to assume responsibility for the job she’s been given as one of the two Witnesses of the apocalypse and she’s loyal to the cause almost to a fault, same as she’s always been concerning her day job. She is calm and collected, even when under extreme amounts of pressure; she and Crane have this and common and it’s part of why they work so well as a team. She’s smart enough to acknowledge and own up to her fear, something that she finds herself forced to do on a regular basis since being introduced to demons, but refuses to let it cripple her, instead using it to ground herself and push through any given situation, a strong believer in putting on a brave face and barrelling through rather than letting herself be beaten back.

Despite the fact that she puts a great deal of effort into being a professional, Abbie is also an openly warm and compassionate woman. While some of her coworkers see her as closed off or narrowly focused, her friends and most of the locals see her as being warm and approachable, with a number of Sleepy Hollow’s citizens remembering her fondly and frequently commenting on their positive experiences with her as a representative of the sheriff’s department. She’s good at offering comfort or peace of mind to civilians whether the case in question is mundane or supernatural in nature.

However, as much as Abbie has endeared herself to Sleepy Hollow’s citizens, there are some relationships much closer to home that haven’t always been quite as good. She and her sister spent several years estranged following an encounter with a demon in the woods when they were young teenagers -- Abbie insisted that they keep their mouths shut when the police asked them what they saw, while Jenny insisted on telling the truth, impossible to believe as it was. The result was that Jenny spent most of her adult life in and out of psychiatric facilities, resentful of Abbie for refusing to back her up. They’ve since reconciled, with Abbie apologizing for not wanting to believe as Jenny herself chose to dig deeper into the world of the supernatural at a young age, and she’s done everything she can to try and earn her sister’s trust back. She does everything within her power to put Jenny first, unwilling to let their relationship turn sour again, and she’s intent on not repeating past mistakes. While she remains the more level-headed of the two and is careful to do what she can to protect their reputations, even as they find themselves surrounded by demons, ghosts and other previously impossible things, she makes every effort to support her sister, sorry for having made her feel abandoned when they were younger. Abbie believes in loyalty in all things, whether it’s to friends or a given cause, but lately has been sure to put loyalty to family first.

Stubborn, headstrong and tirelessly determined, Abbie is a woman who’s known for standing her ground, for being unwavering and sticking hard to her convictions. She doesn’t turn her back on people, no matter how tempting, resolute and firmly grounded in her beliefs. Where she was once skeptical and clung hard to reality, her role as a Witness has lead her to very quickly become open-minded, observant and willing to accept just about anything the universe has chosen to throw at her and her partner over the last year or so, now shrewd and discerning without leaning on doubt as a crutch. She is a confident, capable woman, self-assured and with the enviable ability to take most anything in stride, preferring to take things piece by piece, one day at a time rather than panic, no matter how impossible a situation may be. She is proactive, resourceful and believes in using the channels available to her, seen when she turns to her police connections to gather information on a number of occasions, and despite how seriously she takes her job and how much importance she places on being law-abiding, she’s been seen undermining authority in a number of situations where she was confident that it was the right thing to do, such as defying orders to leave a particular case to her superior in order to prevent further loss of life. As important as she feels it is to follow protocol, she will always put what she feels is right before anything else, especially now that she knows there’s so much that the law itself is not equipped to handle.

Memories Retained or Lost:
Abbie remembers her life before taking on her role as a Witness in its entirety, and remembers most of what followed with the exception of her stay in Purgatory, particularly her time trapped in the dollhouse, the details and significance of which are now hazy to her. She has also forgotten the encounter with her mother's spirit at Tarrytown Psychiatric.

Powers and Abilities:
Abbie has a number of abilities, both mundane and supernatural. She's skilled with standard-issue firearms and is a gifted criminal profiler, to the point that she was headed to Quantico at the start of the series. Other skills include lockpicking, hand-to-hand combat and some swordsmanship, the latter being more recently developed.

Her supernatural skillset includes prophetic dreams and detailed visions of the distant past, with the latter being tied primarily to the past actions of her ancestors and both being consistently relevant to her role as Witness and the ongoing war that she and Crane are expected to be a part of. She has assisted in casting spells, and might have a stronger affinity for magic than she realizes: her ancestor, Grace Dixon, was a witch. and as that kind of power is hereditary, Abbie and her sister have some degree of witch blood flowing through their veins. Abbie has also been visited by and communicated with spirits of the dead, something that seems to be unique to her.

Any other important information (including special inventory items in their possession):
Nothing significant on her, except for her wallet and its contents, along with her phone. Not that she gets service on this side of the Veil.
Why do you think this character would join/work with the Knights?
Abbie is a woman who has always been purpose-driven, even before her becoming a Witness. Her relationship with Sheriff Corbin was what helped her find herself, leading her to law enforcement and helping her turn away from what was quickly becoming a life of crime, and she’s happiest doing work where she feels like she’s making a difference, helping people. The supernatural/magical aspect of things only helps; considering her experiences as a Witness, she’ll feel very much as though she’s in her element and will want to be where she can be the most use to other people, doing the most good, and joining the Knights seems like it would be the perfect opportunity to do just that.
Do you have a preference for which NPC brought in your character?
No preference for NPCs, but Emily and I have discussed having Abbie squired to Kate Beckett!
